My Favorite Oldies (4) : Smoke Gets in Your Eyes (The Platters)

さて、先週に引き続き、オールディーズの王者プラターズが1958年にカバーした名曲「煙が目にしみる（Smoke Gets in Your Eyes ）」をお届けします。

別の歌手によるカバーですが、スティーブン・スピルバーグが監督し、あの名女優オードリー・ヘップバーンの最後の出演作品となった1989年公開の映画「ALWAYS」の挿入歌とし­ても使われました。

なお、歌詞の通り、煙とはタバコの煙ではなく、恋の炎が燃え尽きた後にたった煙です。そんな煙が目にしみてたまらない男の切ない心情を歌っています。

So I chaffed then and I gaily laughed
To think they would doubt my love
